UNISON Welfare

UNISON helps our members in times of personal crisis. In addition to the registered charity UNISON Welfare, our local branch will do what we can to support our members facing particularly difficult personal situations. Because of the confidential nature of the cases, we are not always able to let you know what we have done or give details.

PostcardRecently we provided support to prevent one member being evicted from their home and we helped provide a holiday for the family of another member who had been ill for some time. Do you know of a UNISON colleague who is on sick leave that might benefit from a card or some flowers, just to know that we are thinking of them? If so, please let us know.

Nationally, UNISON set up a fund to help the hundreds of members who were affected by the collapse of the Farepak Christmas savings club. Before Christmas they gave out grants totalling £43,000 and are still looking at hundreds more applications. Whatever the problem, we will do all we can to help our members.

UNISON Welfare is exclusively for the use of members and their dependants in times of need? In 2003 they made grants to 1,600 members and their families. 1,000 members contacted them for debt advice and support. If you would like information or advice look for Welfare under the benefits section of the UNISON national website: www.unison.org.uk

Debt Clinic

UNISON Welfare Debtclinic, the online version of our debt advice service, contains advice and debt information and outlines some of the main debt problems. There are also diagnostic tools to help you set up the best recovery plan for your particular problem. Like UNISON Welfare Debtline the service is completely free to UNISON members: www.debtclinic.co.uk/unison

Issues

Maybe I Should JoinUNISON helps hundreds of individuals on a wide variety of issues

Apart from all the staff that UNISON helps in group issues, we have helped many more in individual cases. Last year alone we helped an average of one member every fortnight with issues of harassment, regrading, legal advice, information on pensions, help for staff involved in University procedures – sickness, capability, grievance, disciplinary etc. As well as providing lots of information and advice for one-off enquiries.

We estimate that well over half of our members have personally received help, support or advice from UNISON with individual issues. That’s one out of every two members have come to us for help of some kind at a local level. This is apart from all the work that the branch does on behalf of all University members without ever being asked by them. And the work that is done nationally for members across the country. And all the advice and benefits that members receive from outside our University Branch – legal advice, car insurance, writing a will, debt advice. etc.
